I want to be like Jake when I grow up the problem is he’s younger than me.

I loved his book and taught parts of it last year. The funny thing is some of students wanted to tell the class they really didn’t like it (because he is not an abolitionist) but many more ended up using his legitimacy risks framework in their papers (because it’s super helpful and he’s just right).

We did read several police and prison abolitionists but I can’t say I’d recommend most of them (and I say that as someone who’s closer to abolitionism than Jake; the movement just has terrible advocates).

Love this story. That's a great thing for an author to aim for -- to come up with a framework so helpful that even your opponents find themselves using it.

As a former Floridian, I loved the gator example, which was not offensive and in fact quite accurate, especially since in many jurisdictions animal control is effectively a division of the sheriff’s office. There’s really a lot of gators in people’s backyards in Florida!

I'd love to hear from a police abolitionist.
